SLAM Top 50: Tim Duncan, no. 25

At some point the run has got to come to an end, right? Seven-footers aren’t supposed to last 18 years in the League or play into their late 30s, and they’re certainly not supposed to be among the NBA’s top centers when they hit their late 30s.

Of course, Tim Duncan isn’t like most players. He’s a five-time Champion, a two-time regular-season MVP, a three-time Finals MVP, a player voted All-NBA First-Team 10 times and a 15-time All-Star. He’s the best power forward in NBA history and one of the greatest big men to ever step foot on an NBA floor, a transcendent star who transformed the San Antonio Spurs from just another small market basketball team into a franchise that every organization in every professional sports league views with envy.

He’s also the rare player who’s just as efficient—and, in a way, effective—as he was in his prime. He’s, obviously, not the same dominant, once-in-a-generation force he once was. But that’s a ridiculous standard to hold a player too. Compare Today’s Duncan to mere mortals, and, well, here are the numbers:

As a 25-year-old, in 2002, his first MVP season, Duncan averaged 22.6 points, 11.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.2 blocks per 36 minutes. He shot 51 percent from the field and had a PER of 27.

Last year, as a 38-year-old, Duncan averaged 17.3 points, 11.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.4 blocks per 36 minutes. He shot 51 percent from the field and had a PER of 22.6.

That drop-off, or lack there of, is almost unheard of (Kareem, Malone. Stockton and Olajuwon are essentially the other only players to register similar PERs at similar age) and the reason the nearly 40-year-old Duncan comes in here at No. 25.

The minutes have dropped—he played just 28.9 last season, something which definitely should definitely be taken into account when compiling a list like this. But for those 30 minutes he is on the floor Duncan remains a force.

Really, it starts with him still knowing how to control a game without the ball in his hands, or anywhere near him. On defense, that means always being in the right place at the right time, even if that means sliding over just a half-a-step. On offense it means knowing when to flash and when to clear out and how to use his ox-legs to set a backbreaking pick.

And then of course there’s his impeccable footwork in the post, and the still-beautiful and perfect bank shot which he can go to whenever he needs. Duncan is one of the players who always seem like he’s thinking 10 steps ahead of everyone else. The skills might have diminished a bit, but a great artist’s mind is the last thing to go. Duncan’s mind certainly hasn’t started to wane, and that Gregg Popovich has kept his star in bubble wrap the past few years is only going to help the aging process.

Take all these factors into account, plus the addition of LaMarcus Aldridge, which will only ease Duncan’s load, and what we’re likely to witness this season from the future Hall of Famer is something really special. After all, it’s not every year that we get to watch a 39-year-old legend spend nearly every night taking the League’s younger players to school.

Derrick Rose: ‘I’m Going to Be the MVP Again’

Derrick Rose’s 2015-16 campaign is off to a strange, and painful start, but there’s plenty of optimism in Chicago around the 2011 NBA MVP.

Based on the results of his offseason training, the Bulls’ management and coaching staff are expecting great things from their superstar point guard.

According to John Calipari, who coached Rose at the University of Memphis, the 26-year-old is confident about leading Chicago to a title and winning his second MVP award.

From the Bulls’ team website:

“Back in July, I called Derrick to check in and talk to him about how he was doing and how his workouts were going,” Bulls general manager Gar Forman related. “Derrick said, ‘You know, Gar, this is really the first summer in several years where I’ve been able to train.’ He was talking about how he felt physically, being able to do basketball specific training and work on his game and work in the weight room. Whereas the previous summers, it had all been rehab. I guess it kind of struck me then, everything he’d been through, and now he’s full time training for basketball. He looks terrific. Physically he’s in a good place, mentally he’s in a good place.”

“I went out and visited him in LA and saw the explosiveness and loved the training that he did,” said new Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg. “I saw him in the weight room in the morning and then got with him on the floor in the afternoon. Getting back here, seeing him in the gym, he’s got his explosiveness right now. And watching where he finished the year, re-watching the Milwaukee and Cleveland series, he finished the year playing at a very high level. I think he’s taking that momentum of how that season finished into his offseason program. I think Derrick’s in terrific shape right now. He’s done really good things with his body and having that whole summer where he hasn’t been rehabbing and being able to add to his game is very important. I anticipate Derrick getting off to a great start.”

“I say where are you?” Calipari related during the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame week ceremonies earlier this month when Calipari was being enshrined. “He says, ’Coach, I’m telling you, I’m coming back.’ He said, ‘I want to win a championship for Chicago and I’m going to be the MVP again.’ […] “I hung up,” Calipari recalled, “and I went right to Gar Forman and said, ‘It’s back on. I’m just telling you.’”

Introducing the Jordan CP3.IX (KICKS)

The Jordan CP3.IX is here, folks. Chris Paul’s ninth signature sneaker from Jordan Brand is his most technically advanced to date—built to stabilize CP3’s feet as he makes quick cuts and directional changes en route to the hoop. It’s what the brand calls “Striking Control.”

Both colorways you see above will release Wednesday, October 1 in China. The Yellow Dragon colorway, an ode to the dragon dance that celebrates the Chinese New Year, will be the first to hit retail in North America—it drops tomorrow (10/1) for $130. The Emerald colorway is part of the shoe’s general release on November 1.

We had a chance to check out more of the upcoming colorways at yesterday’s Jordan Brand Holiday Preview in New York, so expect to see this at some point this season, too:

More info on the CP3.IX, straight from Jordan Brand:

The Jordan CP3.IX employs several performance-driven technologies to meet the demands of aggressive play. An innovative web-lacing system offers lateral support and 360-degree lockdown. A composite mesh material and strategically placed foam form a durable and supportive upper that is also lightweight and breathable. A full-length, breathable internal bootie provides a close, one-to-one fit.

A nine-chamber Zoom Air unit in the forefoot acts like a piston for mechanical cushioning and greater responsiveness. Outrigger enhancements to the sole provide lateral stability during sharp cuts and jumps while rubber wraps the medial side, enhancing traction and control.

The Chinese character for “family” is inscribed on the outsole’s toe to symbolize the player’s close relationship with his family. Additionally, the chevron symbol on the sole – an icon of CP3’s signature shoes – honors his late grandfather.

Andre Iguodala on Sixth Man Award: ‘It’s Like Affirmative Action’

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr plans to keep brining Andre Iguodala off the bench, a role the veteran has grudgingly embraced since last season.

The reigning NBA Finals MVP, though, isn’t looking to be considered the top sixth-man in the L.

Iguodala, 31, dismisses the Sixth Man of the Year award by comparing it to affirmative action.

Per USA Today:

“You learn how to embrace (the role), and when you embrace things, things tend to work out in your favor,” said Iguodala, who is again expected to play behind starter Harrison Barnes while leading the second unit. “I’ve been through (playing sixth man) for a year, (I) understand it a trillion times more than last year. Definitely more comfortable. I’m actually looking forward to it.”

As for the notion of winning the Sixth Man of the Year award, Iguodala was quick to stop the conversation there. His view, as he so comically shared, is that the individual accolades should begin and end with the league’s MVP award.

“I’m not a fan of the award, actually,” he said. “It’s like affirmative action or something (like that) to me.”

SLAM Top 50: DeAndre Jordan, no. 26

The Los Angeles Clippers underwent another facelift over the summer after an outstanding regular season and dethroning the San Antonio Spurs in the first round of the Playoffs.

Their capitulation to the Houston Rockets in the next round convinced the front office they needed to retool but first they had to re-sign DeAndre Jordan who considered bolting for the Dallas Mavericks.

Jordan had the most effective season of his career, averaging 11.5 points, 15 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and a steal, which boiled down to a player efficiency rating of 21. He’s only the fifth player to average such a line throughout the regular season. Moses Malone was the last to pull it off with the Sixers in the early ’80s.

DeAndre caught a lot of flack for how he went about testing the waters of free agency. It was reminiscent of 2011 when he signed a four-year, $43 million offer sheet with the Golden State Warriors, forcing the Clippers to match. This time he used Dallas as leverage by verbally agreeing to sign with the Mavs, and the Clippers responded by engineering his abduction until an agreement of four years, $87.5 million was reached.

The Clippers were stuck between a rock and a hard place and would’ve been dead in the water without Jordan since there was no replacement close to his skill set available on the open market. His streak of 300 consecutive starts makes him the NBA’s reigning Iron Man among currently active players and underscores how integral he’s become to the Clippers over the last few years.

Jordan led his team in rebounds as well as blocks while logging the third-most minutes on average during the regular season and the Playoffs. Maxed out, he’s second only to CP3 when it comes to currency. The shift in the financial pecking order essentially makes DeAndre the man sitting next to the man, though Blake Griffin remains the primary or secondary option.

For Griffin and the Clippers, they need a beast like Jordan, a two-time rebounding champ, in the middle. Offensively he can be a liability if he’s forced to play outside his comfort zone but that rarely occurs since he knows when to stay in his own lane.

He only had 66 post-up possessions last season, compared to 103 in the pick and roll, 93 in transition, 192 off the cut, and 232 on the offensive glass. A small margin of his possessions came out of the post. Out of the 534 shots he made last year, only 18 of them were in the post.

His pressure on the glass is what makes defenses collapse, which creates opportunities on the wing and perimeter for everyone. Jordan is more of an asset on defense with his extraordinary size and agility that discourages opponents from attacking the rim, which allows his teammates to apply more pressure out front and on the wing. His 15.7 rebounds per 36 minutes translates into greater ball control.

<div class=”ftb-widget” data-width=”640″ data-height=”460″ data-widget-id=”jvTArDKREH3″ data-href=”http://ift.tt/1j0VNKG; ></div><script async src=”http://ift.tt/1haND0k;

This year, the pressure is on Jordan to play like an All-Star franchise center if the Clippers are intent on venturing further than the second round of the Playoffs, especially with the Warriors staring them down from atop the Pacific. Winning the division isn’t out of the question when the personnel they added over the summer is taken into account.

The addition of Paul Pierce, Lance Stephenson and Wesley Johnson brings equilibrium to the front court and gives the Clippers more firepower than they’ve had in years. There’s now more depth at the 1 and 4 with the acquisition of Pablo Prigioni and Josh Smith from Houston but the weak link is at the 2 with JJ Redick and Jamal Crawford. Their player efficiency ratings were slightly above average but their true value is in their ability to stretch the floor.

JJ shot 40 percent from long distance in the Playoffs, but Jamal’s dismal numbers aren’t even worth mentioning. Apparently backup shooting guards don’t come cheap if Redick and Crawford’s paychecks are any indication. Any plans the Clippers have of shoring up that position will have to hold since they blew their load on DeAndre.

Rivers, Stephenson and Johnson could collectively swing it but ultimately the Clippers’ big three need to lead the way if the Clippers are gonna make a run.

LeBron James ‘Optimistic’ But Won’t Discuss Tristan Thompson Anymore

Aside from declaring that the Cleveland Cavaliers need to resolve the Tristan Thompson contractual situation, LeBron James has tried to stay out of the negotiations between his teammate and employer.

James, who shares representation with the big guy, says he will no longer comment on the stalled talks (though, you can be sure, reporters won’t leave him alone about it.)

For what it’s worth, LeBron seems to believe that a long-term solution will eventually be found between Thompson and the Cavs.

Per the Akron Beacon Journal:

James cut short a question about Thompson following Tuesday’s first practice and reiterated what he said on Monday. […] “I’ve already addressed it,” James said. “I probably won’t address it again too much more. I’m optimistic both sides will get something done and he’ll be here sooner than later.”

James and Thompson share an agent in Rich Paul. Thompson was a no-show at the open of camp Tuesday because of a contract dispute that has dragged on for months. General Manager David Griffin said Tuesday there was no real update on the situation. Coach David Blatt said Thompson isn’t missing much — yet. As for when Thompson’s absence will start to hurt preparations, Blatt didn’t want to get specific.

“I’d rather not think about the bad end of the expectation,” he said. “I’m just hoping to see him here sooner than later, that’s all.”

Kenneth Faried ‘Hurt’ By the Ty Lawson Trade

For the first time in Kenneth Faried’s four-year NBA career, he will not be teammates with point guard Ty Lawson, who was traded by Denver to Houston this summer.

Faried admits that he was bummed out to see the Nuggets deal away his buddy.

Lawson, meanwhile, is excited for his new opportunity to compete for a title with the Rockets.

Per the Denver Post:

Asked what he thought of the Lawson trade, Faried stayed mostly matter-of-fact.

“Basketball,” Faried said. “Nature of the beast. I’m not part of the business side I’m part of the playing side. I just want to get up-and-down and play the game. It hurt me because that was my best friend but it’s the nature of the beast. You’ve got to live with it.”

50 Questions for 2015-’16: Is Sacramento A Disaster Or Threat In The West?

NEW YORK, NY - DECEMBER 29: DeMarcus Cousins #15 of the Sacramento Kings looks on in the second half during a game against the Brooklyn Nets at the Barclays Center on December 29, 2014 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. (Photo by Alex Goodlett/Getty Images)

Getting ready for the 2015-’16 season? I’m asking 50 questions before things get under way. Have an important question for the upcoming NBA season you want answered? Find me on Twitter (@thatjoemags). Thanks for reading!

DeMarcus Cousins and the Sacramento Kings have been through a lot. Through five seasons, Boogie Cousins has validated the No. 5 pick the Kings used on him and then some. He averaged 24 and 12 last season and made his first All-Star team. During the sunnier days in the early year, he even displayed deft ability on the defensive end.

The Kings were 23-36 with Cousins in 2014-’15, a record that speaks to the disarray of the franchise following the scrutinized firing of Mike Malone. As George Karl and Vlade Divac adjusted in their new seats of power, Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé grew frustrated with the public pissing match taking place between his team’s coach, front office and franchise player.

Ranadivé reportedly blocked deals for Cousins, making him unavailable — Karl was going to coach Cousins or not at all. While there’s an argument to be made trading Cousins for a bounty of picks and young assets could jump start “the next great Kings team,” Cousins is a Top 10 player, and dealing one of those is almost universally a bad idea. Cousins is under team control for the next three seasons, his salary jumping from $15.8m to $16.8m to $18m — an absolute coup for the Kings.

In a league embracing small lineups and positional ambiguity, building around Cousins, particularly at his price, is a head start toward building a contender. There’s a shortage of capable bigs who can check Cousins on one end and draw him outside the paint on the other. Anthony Davis comes to mind, but he’s the exception to everything, and there’s only a handful of guys outside Davis and Draymond Green who even come to mind. Cousins is a problem for defenses, an outlier in a league with fewer and fewer truly dominate post-ups scorers, let alone someone with his burst and athleticism.

Over the past five seasons, amidst constant rumors the franchise was relocating, the Kings have made it look pretty damn difficult to build around their cornerstone. This summer marked the first aggressive push Sacramento has made to get Boogie help, and to their credit the Kings are more talented on paper.

Cousins and Rudy Gay return as the team’s top two players. Gay would be an interesting stretch-4 candidate next to Boogie — the type of player Sacramento has failed to bring into the fold before — but Divac has instead opted to go big.

Divas signed big men Kostas Koufos (4-years, $33 million) and Quincy Acy and drafted 7-footer Willie Cauley-Stein with the No. 6 pick. He allocated the rest of the team’s funds to shooting (Marco Belinelli, Omri Casspi) and guard play (Rajon Rondo, Seth Curry). Starting Cousins and Cauley-Stein/Koufos provides setbacks on offense, but has the makings of a tough defensive front, and the rookie is spry enough to chase forwards around the perimeter.

This is where I should stop and reference the hideous, short-sided move Sacramento made with Philadelphia in order to clear the necessary cap space to add, umm, Rondo and Belinelli? The ramifications of this move, which will fork over juicy draft picks to Sacramento for years to come — in addition to parting ways with Nik Stauskas one year after drafting him in the lottery — could very well shackle the Kings for the foreseeable future.

As for now, though, the Kings accomplished what they wanted — they are better this season. And, for the first time in a long while, the Western Conference is taking applicants for the a playoff spot! The Mavericks are falling further and further by the day and the Blazers are no longer the veteran-laden bunch of the past few years. The Kings will square off against the Jazz, the Suns and whoever else hangs around for the No. 8 seed. A healthy Cousins gives Sacramento an edge over those other teams, and Cousins is now equipped, theoretically, with enough talent to lead Sacramento to a winning season.

DALLAS, TX - DECEMBER 28: Rajon Rondo #9 of the Dallas Mavericks dribbles the ball against the Oklahoma City Thunder at American Airlines Center on December 28, 2014 in Dallas, Texas. (Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

If we’re talking about the Kings specifically in 2015-’16, then we’re specifically talking about Rondo. What version of Rondo is coming to Sacramento following the nightmare ending to his Dallas tenure?

Ideally, Cousins would be surrounded by multiple deep threats at all times. Ben McLemore was much improved on 3s in year two (35.8 percent), and the former No. 7 pick has enough talent to suggest continued improvement with continuity. Adding Belinelli on the wing gives Sacramento a badly needed spot-up threat, and he and Casspi can juice up an otherwise dry second-unit.

A three-man frontcourt of Cousins, Cauley-Stein and Koufos, however, presents unavoidable spacing issues — and that’s assuming the point guard position is a place of strength shooting the ball. The Kings just added one of the league’s most limited scoring threats in Rondo, a player with a head that seldom fits in the door, and a ring on his finger that gives him power in any locker room.

Rondo should come off the bench, where he could use his revolutionary passing skills to lift second-units, and lean on Belinelli and Casspi to balance the floor. At $9 million this season, it’s unclear if Ranadivé is interested in benching the biggest free agent addition of his early tenure as owner.

Cousins devolved nice chemistry with Darren Collison, who had his best season since he broke out as Chris Paul’s backup in New Orleans. Collison will never move the Earth on defense, but he hit 37 percent of his shots from deep for a consecutive season, and ripped off the best stats line of his career: 16.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.5 steals. The Kings outscored opponents by 8.1 points per 100 possessions, per NBA.com, when Cousins and Collison shared the floor — although the two only played 935 minutes together (33 games).

The Kings could make the playoffs for the first time since 2006. They also could fall short. Having hamstrung their future in order to be better right away, let’s hope for the sanity of Sacramento fans that Cousins, Karl and this team take a full step forward.

Kobe Bryant: Will He Stay Or Will He Go?

Kobe Bryant poses with Phil Jackson and the Lakers 2010 Championship trophy

With the return of the NBA season comes unwavering coverage of one of its greatest players of all time, Kobe Bryant.

An unquestioned legend, Bryant is a rarity in today’s NBA as he’s played his entire career for the same team. But will he retire with that team?

There hasn’t been a shortage of attention paid to what Bryant, who’s entering the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, will do after this season, which we saw last week when New York Knicks President and Bryant’s former coach Phil Jackson implied that the star shooting guard would suit up elsewhere after this year.

“I don’t think it’s his last year. Sounds like it may be his last year as a Laker, but I think that’s kind of what came out of there,” the Zen-master said in response to a question about whether he’d pursue Bryant in free agency next summer.

Bryant was prompted about Jackson’s comments on Tuesday, and he told Yahoo Sports “I’m a Laker, man. I’m a Laker for better or worse.” Not exactly the most affirmative way to deny that he could wind up elsewhere (he did also add a “dude, I bleed purple and gold”), but this was Bryant’s way of shooting down his former coach, who he won five NBA championships with.

This has brought up a whole discussion on whether or not Bryant will end his career in Hollywood, which I don’t think anyone could come up with a definitive answer for. However, I’m going to offer scenarios for both options.

I’ll start by saying that I’m leaning 75-25 that he DOES NOT retire a Laker. Knowing all that we know about Mamba, he’s as competitive as any player we’ve seen enter the league since Michael Jordan. Now factor in what we know about the Lakers and they’re at best two years or so from possibly competing for a playoff spot, if not further away.

Portland Trailblazer’s GM Neil Olshey made a great point on Grantland’s Zach Lowe’s podcast, The Lowe Post, about rebuilding his depleted roster with players who are on the same timeline as star Damian Lillard. Not to put myself in the same breath as those two great basketball minds, but I discussed the idea when previewing the Knicks recently, how Carmelo Anthony doesn’t exactly fit in because there aren’t many good players on the team who are ready to win now, which is undisputedly where Anthony is at in his career.

You look at the Lakers and their greatest assets besides Bryant are rookie D’Angelo Russell, and second year player – who’s practically a rookie again as he suffered a season ending foot injury in the first game of the season – Julius Randle. Considering it took a team with Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden a couple of seasons to really gel and get acclimated to the NBA, I don’t think the Lakers have a shot at being relevant until the 2017-18 season at best unless they miraculously sign two max players to pair with Bryant in the 2016 offseason.

You go from there and wonder: is Bryant at a place in his career where he wants to be a mentor and care more about helping this organization grow than chasing championship number six? Let’s rewind to last December, where he was visibly upset with the lack of talent and readiness surrounding him. I’m not buying that version of Kobe for a second.

I think the other major factor in Bryant not retiring is how much he feels he has left in the tank. After missing 123 games over the last two seasons, that’s 75 percent of games over that span for those keeping score at home, we all know that Bryant wants to go out on a high note. Considering the Lakers are probably going to stink this season, and taking into account that Bryant’s been physically falling apart these last few years, I could totally see him trying to extend his career by playing somewhere he feels he has more support around him.

I read a report today that Bryant has consulted with Jordan and baseball great Derek Jeter about when/how to call it quits, but I think he has too much pride to finish his career with three losing seasons, with at least two of them being completely hampered by injuries.

This is also a situation where logic simply cannot be applied, as your realistic expectations (unless you’re a blind faith Lakers/Kobe fan) and Bryant’s expectations are impossible to align.

If Bryant isn’t going to end his playing days until he’s able to remain healthy for close to a full season, at around 35 minutes per game, he may play until the day he dies. Literally. Which is funny, because two seasons ago when he signed his 2-year, $50M extension we all thought that the 2015-16 season would be the last time we’d see the current third leading scorer in NBA history.

I think the only way that we see Bryant retire with the Lakers is if he does in fact decide that this will be his last season. Not that Mitch Kupchak and the Buss family would be prudent enough to not pay an arm and a leg to keep a player who’s become a complete liability on the defensive end, but if Bryant’s going to stick around the league it’s going to be to prove a point, and I don’t think there’s anything he can prove with a team constructed the way the Lakers currently are.

I don’t think Bryant could ever be the Paul Pierce type, where he looks for the right situation for him to only do what he excels at, regardless of where that situation might be. I think he’s stubborn enough to think he can be the missing piece for a team in the hunt to contend.

I don’t know that any legitimately good teams would chase him in free agency next summer, but if he does make himself available someone better than the Lakers will certainly bite.

The question is “is that what Bryant will want?” Unfortunately I don’t think anyone, even Bryant himself, knows the answer to that question.

Maybe Jackson does.

Derrick Rose Responds to Sexual Assault Allegations

More unseemly and bizarre details have emerged from the legal battle between Derrick Rose and an unidentified accuser.

The woman in question alleges that she was sexually assaulted by Rose and a group of his friends, which Rose has repeatedly denied.

According to the former NBA MVP, this whole fight began after he refused to pay for a sex toy.

Per TMZ:

Rose has now filed docs of his own in which he claims the accuser “consented to sexual interaction with more than one co-defendant on more than one occasion, consented to sexual interactions on the day in question, and invited the defendants to her apartment and buzzed them in.”

Rose says things were so cool the following day — the accuser casually had a cup of coffee with her roommate in the morning after the sex … and headed into work for a full shift. The implication is that a rape victim would have been way too distraught to have done any of that.

In the docs, Rose says the woman only began to get upset with him a few weeks or months later because she felt she should have been reimbursed for one of the sex toys she bought and used during the night in question.

Report: Kevin Durant Considering Lakers if He Leaves OKC

Kevin Durant’s free agency may still be nine months away, but the unending speculation promises to only intensify between now and Jul.1.

Durant hasn’t indicated which way he’s leaning once he hits the open market, leaving the rest of us to take wild guesses.

Enter Stephen A. Smith, who reported on “First Take” Tuesday that the Los Angeles Lakers would be KD’s top choice should he decide to leave Russell Westbrook and the OKC Thunder behind.

(Oh, and don’t forget that the New York Knicks are supposedly a player in the Durant Sweepstakes, too.)

Per LBS (via BSO):

On ESPN’s “First Take” Tuesday morning, Stephen A. Smith said that sources have told him Durant’s preferred landing spot is the Los Angeles Lakers if he does not re-sign with the Thunder next summer.

“Regardless of how senseless it may (sound), in one breath I’m hearing that if Kevin Durant doesn’t stay in Oklahoma City, L.A. is his primary objective and landing spot as opposed to South Beach or even his home of Washington, D.C.,” Smith said.

“I heard Melo, Kevin Durant, Kobe,” Smith added. “And when you take into account that Phil Jackson is on the record saying it might be Kobe’s last year in L.A. — opening the door that there are possibilities for him to go elsewhere. All I’m saying is you just never know.”

Jared Dudley Says Former No. 3 Pick Adam Morrison ‘Never Took Showers’

on Tuesday, September 29, 2015

When your job is to play in the NBA and, you know, sweat for a living, normal hygiene suggests you ought to take a shower afterwards. But according to Wizards forward Jared Dudley, that wasn’t part of former No. 3 overall draft pick Adam Morrison‘s routine—like, at all, ever. Dudley said during a recent interview with 106.7 The Fan DC radio in Washington that if he had to pick his most disgusting teammate ever, it would be Morrison.

In fact, Dudley says while playing for the Charlotte Bobcats, Gerald Wallace once had to force the former Gonzaga star to shower. Not only that, but Morrison chewed tobacco and wore the same three shirts all season long, according to Dudley.

Originally transcribed at WizHappyHour.com, here are Dudley’s exact quotes via the Washington Post:

Dudley was also asked to name the worst dresser or most disgusting teammate from his career, and he immediately had an answer.

“Adam Morrison,” Dudley called out, naming a teammate from the 2008-09 Charlotte Bobcats. “Remember Adam Morrison? He never took showers, he did the chewing tobacco that he spit all the time, and he wore the same three polos the whole year. This is a guy who made a lot of money, too, at that time. He was the face of diabetes, he was doing everything, he was on the cover of college games, he was [everywhere], and he was by far the worst and [most] disgusting.”

“He was playing when I was there, that’s the thing, he was playing,” Dudley said. “He then tore his ACL, that’s when he didn’t play, but he was playing when I was there. He was playing like 30 minutes a game. Gerald Wallace had to force him to take a shower one time. Had to force him. Imagine that. Imagine forcing a grown man to take a shower. He should be ashamed of himself.”

Kyrie Irving on Cavs’ Mentality This Season: ‘A Lot More Rage’

Kyrie Irving wasn’t able to be on the court with his teammates to finish last season, as the Cavs fell to Golden State in the Finals with Kyrie suffering a fractured knee cap in Game 1. Now, he’s promising to help the Cavs play with an edge this season. Irving said during Cleveland’s media day on Monday that the team will play with “more rage” and not “too much smiling.”

More, from our friend Dave McMenamin at ESPN:

More than three months after the Cleveland Cavaliers lost their Finals matchup with the Golden State Warriors, several Cavs team leaders say they plan to funnel that disappointment to fuel them for the 2015-16 season.

“From me there’s going to be a lot more rage, a lot more emotion,” Cavs guard Kyrie Irving said at the team’s media day Monday. “There won’t be too much smiling or anything like that from our team. That’s the mentality we have to have. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Irving’s declaration echoed LeBron James’, who is coming off the fourth Finals loss of his career. James shared how the Miami Heat’s championship defeat at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks in 2011 put his team in the proper mindset to take it all in 2012.

“One thing that we did that didn’t even need to be talked about after we lost our first year in Miami when we came back, we was angry,” James said. “We was very, very, very angry. And everybody that we went against knew it when we came back.”

Kobe Bryant Plans to Retire in a Laker Uniform

Don’t get your hopes up, Phil.

Kobe Bryant still won’t confirm if this will be his final season in the NBA, but one thing remains certain for The Black Mamba: he won’t play for any team other than the Los Angeles Lakers.

The retirement issue won’t go away, obviously, which Bryant is surely thrilled about.

The 37-year-old legend says he can’t imagine hooping for a different organization than the one he has starred for over the last two decades.

Per Yahoo! Sports:

“A lot of players want to go to different teams or contend to win championships,” Bryant said at the conclusion of the Lakers’ media day on Monday. “I’m a Laker, man. I’m a Laker for better or worse.”

Bryant, 37, is entering his 20th season with the Lakers. He’s making $23.5 million in the final year of his contract, and if he does continue to play, he expects he’ll do so in a Lakers uniform. […] “I’m a Laker, man. How many times do I have to say that?” Bryant said “Dude, I bleed purple and gold.”

“I don’t have any expectations yet because we have a new group and a lot of young guys,” Bryant said. “Julius (Randle), this is really his rookie year. (Jordan) Clarkson gained valuable experience at the end of last year. You got D’Angelo (Russell) coming. You got a lot of players that have a lot of figuring out to do of the pro game still. […] So we’re not sure how that is going to mix. We don’t even know how our starting five is going to look like. We got to figure that stuff out first.”

SLAM Top 50: Dwyane Wade, no. 27

Dwyane Wade doesn’t care about your opinion. Nor should he.

He clearly paid last year’s SLAM Top 50—where he was slotted at 32—no mind. Because apart from missing 20 games last season with a strained hamstring (D-Wade hasn’t played 70+ since ’10-11), dude still went out and averaged 21.5 a night, good for 11th in the League.

Klay Thompson and James Harden, the two shooting guards ahead of Wade on the scoring list, shot 46 and 44 percent from the field, respectively. Though he played far fewer minutes, Miami’s future Hall of Famer edged each of them at 47 percent.

Father Time is knocking on Flash’s door, but Wade still has more than a few tricks up his shooting sleeve. His off-the-dribble, mid-range game remains filthy; while he may have lost a step, he’s always been two or three ahead of any defender. His crossover still freezes the quickest guards in the L, and he when he penetrates, he still glides like a luxury car through traffic. Though Kyrie Irving has replaced him as the best 6-4 or under finisher, Wade can still launch, take contact and lay it in.

Facts only: Wade’s passing ability has always been somewhat underrated. When LeBron—arguably a top-three passer in the League—joined the Heat, Wade’s distributing skills were overshadowed. Remember: When he linked wit LBJ, his dimes per game dipped from 6.5 per game to 4.6 in a single year. Now, Wade’s APG are slightly up again—his 4.8 per outing in ’14-15 ranked third among 2-guards behind Harden’s 7.0 and Evan Turner’s 5.5. Expect Wade’s average to increase again as Miami regains a fully healthy—and lowkey dangerous—starting five.

The Heat were decimated with injuries last season. In addition to Wade’s 20 missed games, Josh McRoberts missed 65, Chris Anderson missed 22, Luol Deng missed 10, Hassan Whiteside missed 10, Udonis Haslem missed eight and Goran Dragic missed three. Chris Bosh dealt with life-threating blood clots in his lungs, which forced him to miss the final 38 games of the season.

But the Heat’s newly formed starting five of Dragic, Wade, Deng, Bosh and Whiteside is now injury-free and ready to go. If Wade can stay healthy (a huge ‘if’ for a player who has never gone 82), his game should continue to age nicely alongside such a talented and capable group of teammates. His pairing with Dragic—Miami’s best PG since Tim Hardaway—is especially intriguing. If Bosh is back to his usual self and Whiteside can continue to wreak havoc inside, Dragic and Wade could take a stab at Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan’s hold on the League’s third-best backcourt tandem.

In June, there was talk we might see Wade in a Cavs, Lakers or Bulls uniform this season. Luckily for Miami, the franchise retained its most decorated player when he agreed to a one-year, $20 million deal, which replaced his $16.1 million player option. The money is well deserved coming off his 10th season of 20-plus ppg and his 11th All-Star appearance.

South Beach is still Miami-Wade County, and there’s still plenty of bolt left in the Flash.

Chandler Parsons Says DeAndre Jordan ‘Screwed Over’ Dallas

Needless to say, but Chandler Parsons was less than pleased with DeAndre Jordan’s infamous change-of-heart during free agency this summer.

Parsons, along with Dallas Mavericks team owner Mark Cuban, got Jordan drunk and well-fed for a few days and (almost) got him to fully commit to them.

Parsons, who takes great pride in his social and partying skills, says the big fella screwed over his squad.

Per GQ:

Parsons prefers to call his off-the-court pursuits collaborations among friends instead of business relationships, which is perhaps appropriate for someone who has been designated the NBA’s lockdown social recruiter. “I’m a people person,” Parsons says. “I’m the youngest of four boys. I’ve never been shy. I’ve always been outgoing and the most likable person in the room.”

The friendship is a bit of a strange dynamic considering Parsons and Mavericks owner Mark Cuban put together a full-court press to recruit DeAndre Jordan, a teammate of (Blake) Griffin’s, to leave the Clippers and join the Mavericks. Playing his role as chief of recruiting, Parsons, who had knee surgery earlier this summer, flew himself to Los Angeles, found out who Jordan was working out with, and started working out with that person during his rehab. He had dinner with Jordan for five straight nights at one point. The recruiting process was described elsewhere as an “Entourage-style romp” through the hottest clubs and most exclusive nightspots in Los Angeles and Houston. Jordan verbally committed but later reneged and returned to the Clippers. There was an emoji war on Twitter, and the whole thing became an event of its own for NBA free agency, which already exists as the season after the actual season. Parsons and Jordan have spoken several times since, although Parsons admits the friendship isn’t the same as it once was. “He didn’t do anything illegal. I’m not mad at him. At the end of the day, he’s a grown man and he’s entitled to do whatever he wants,” Parsons says. “He’s one of the best young centers in the NBA, and I wanted to play with him. He could have made us great. But he screwed us over.”
