Report: Timberwolves to Buyout Anthony Bennett

on Monday, September 21, 2015

Anthony Bennett, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, is reportedly on the verge of getting bought out by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Minny acquired the 22-year-old big fella as part of the Kevin Love-Andrew Wiggins blockbuster trade, and has since been trying to get rid of him.

Bennett has averaged 4.7 points and 2.5 rebounds in two disappointing seasons:

Bennett, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft to the Cleveland Cavaliers, is on track to be remembered as one of the all-time draft busts in league history. Nevertheless, no one beyond the Cavaliers front office had Bennett pegged as a top-10 pick in that draft – never mind No. 1 overall.

Bennett’s reps have been eager for a contract buyout to allow him the chance for greater playing time, league sources said. The Timberwolves have a deep frontcourt, and there is no little, if no, future for him with the franchise. […] The Philadelphia 76ers and Portland Trail Blazers have the salary-cap space to claim Bennett and his $5.8 million salary for the 2015-16 season. Cleveland has a trade exception that could absorb Bennett, but that scenario is farfetched.

Bennett, a 6-foot-8 forward, was a shocking choice for the No. 1 overall pick by the Cavaliers in 2013, and immediately struggled with weight and injuries. Nevertheless, Bennett has shown enough potential to become a serviceable forward and could easily be claimed off waivers.
